A Brief Overview


Spectroscopy is the study of the interaction between matter and radiative energy of different types (electromagnetic, acoustic, ion flux, etc). When we do not specify the nature of the radiative energy, we are talking about optical spectroscopy - the interaction between matter and light.

Historically, spectroscopy originated through the study of visible light dispersed according to its wavelength, by a prism. Later the concept was expanded greatly to include any interaction with radiative energy as a function of its wavelength or frequency.

Modular Spectrometers and Monochromators

A spectrometer separates incoming light by wavelength in order to measure a property of that light. Modular spectrometers allow the user to adjust several facets of their system, such as wavelength range or resolution, to find the best fit for their application.

A monochromator separates incoming light into its component wavelengths, selecting only a very narrow bandwidth of interest to output. Spectrograph separates incoming light into its component wavelengths for recording and analysis.

The TEO-200-X series of FTIR spectrometers represent a low cost Fourier transform infrared spectrometers and employ a number of unique features that ensure high performance from a compact instrument. The 200-X measures just 59 X 39 X 19 cm and is regarded as one of the most compact and versatile infrared FTIR spectrophotometers. The design of the 200-X is unique both in terms of optical design and the software and firmware designed specifically to significantly reduce overall analytical times. The interferometer geometry employs a new compact Michelson self compensating optical system that eliminates many of the optical alignment problems found in conventional type optical interferometers. The 200-X design avoids the use of conventional corner cube optics and dynamic alignment. In practice this means that the instrument can be used in the research laboratory, in any university or college environment and if required, can also be used outside laboratory or in remote locations.

The sample compartment is large and can accommodate all of the normal sample handling requirements relating to FTIR spectroscopy. This unique compartment will also accommodate a wide range of accessories supplied by specialist accessory manufacturers. Overall dimensions are W20 X D26 X H16 cm . The optical axis is 74.5 mm above the base of the sample compartment and there is free space of 90 mm above the optical axis to the underside of the lid.

In order to facilitate the use of more than one beam splitter or detector , provisions have been made to interchange the beam splitter and detector assemblies allowing the 200-X to be used at any wavelength from 15000 to 400 cm-1.

There are however, three dry nitrogen gas inlets on the rear of the spectrometer for the purging of the detector compartment, sample compartment, and interferometer compartment from moisture, carbon dioxide and other gases.

With a 2400 l/mm grating it can achieve resolutions better than 0.01 nm in the standard single pass configuration. This version uses 84 x 84 mm gratings for an aperture of f/9.7.By default the monochromator comes with a single grating kinematic mount. Users can manually swap one grating for another without losing alignment. An optional motorized 3-grating turret is available for automatic grating selection without opening the housing. The 9490 has a flat field output allowing it to operate as a spectrograph using a linear array, multi-channel detector to capture the entire output spectrum continuously. Sciencetech provides a selection of 1" wide CCDs and photo-diode linear array detectors mounted on a multi-axis adjustable focusing platform for use with the 9490.
Some models of the 9490 can be updgraded to dual pass operation (-DP). With the -DP dual pass upgrade option even higher resolution is available by switching to a "double pass" configuration that effectively doubles the focal length to 2m.

The Sciencetech 9055 is a 250mm asymmetric focal length modified Czerny-Turner monochromator. It has a flat field output for use as a spectrograph. This model has an f/3.5 aperture (for the "Fast" version with f/2.5, please see the 9055F). It has a computer-controlled interchangeable turret for automatic grating and wavelength selection.
Both the input and output ports are located on the front faceplate of the monochromator, and the system includes one SS80 slit at the input port. CE compliant.

It Includes a Sci-Mono, a Windows based software module with a simple graphical user interface for controlling Sciencetech stepping monochromator wavelength selection. SciMono is provided free of charge with a Sciencetech motorized monochromator when SciSpec software has not been purchased.

Sciencetech Software (Sci-Spec) is available at an additional cost. It is a standalone data acquisition and allows controlling the monochromator by itself.

The inbound light is dispersed by the first grating and again by the second. Both gratings rotate simultaneously in the same direction, and in the DA the monochromators are coupled so that the dispersion is double that of a single 9030 monochromator. Bandpass is half of the corresponding 9030 monochromator for the same output slit, and resolution using a 100 µm slit is 0.4 nm.

The high resolution upgrade option extends the translating stage to 300mm, allowing the SPS-300 to achieve a resolution of 0.020 wavenumbers. This is an Echelle Spectrometer designed for diffraction limit operation, that provides a full spectrum coverage without gaps over a tunable 150nm range at a resolution of ~2pm in single pass mode. The spectrometer uses two gratings, two 1.5m f.l. parabolic reflectors and a corrector lens to produce a cross-dispersed echellegram that is recorded on a 3k x 3k cooled CCD camera with 12u pixels, at a dispersion of 1 pm/pixel. The long, thin echellegram is fit to the square CCD format using a 3 section image slicer, to maximize wavelength coverage and resolution.

The compact design is made possible by its Seya-Namioka optical layout, using a single holographic concave grating and f/3.2 aperture. A pair of removable fixed-width slits are included for the input and output ports. Additional removable slits and custom width slits can also be purchased separately.
Mirror coatings have been chosen for this model to enhance performance in the VIS-NIR region.

The beam-splitter consist of very fine parallel aluminum lines spaced 4 µm apart on a thin mylar substrate. It has the widest spectral range with a higher frequency cut-off than that of other polarizers that work in the near-millimeter wavelength range.
