A Brief Overview


Spectroscopy is the study of the interaction between matter and radiative energy of different types (electromagnetic, acoustic, ion flux, etc). When we do not specify the nature of the radiative energy, we are talking about optical spectroscopy - the interaction between matter and light.

Historically, spectroscopy originated through the study of visible light dispersed according to its wavelength, by a prism. Later the concept was expanded greatly to include any interaction with radiative energy as a function of its wavelength or frequency.

The Sciencetech 9040 is a half meter, high performance monochromator/spectrograph. It supports large size gratings for high light throughput: three sizes are available: 64 x 64mm, 84 x 84 mm, and 102 x 102mm which allow it to achieve apertures of f/6.9, f/5.2 and f/4.0 respectiveley.

The 9040 is based on the Czerny-Turner optical configuration. The 9040 supports both single grating and triple grating turrete configurations. This version is the single grating turret version and supports a single large size grating mounted on a rotating turret for wavelength selection. The grating is installed on a removable kinematic mount and can be manually swapped with other gratings without disruption to the optical alignment.

This leads to a spectrally homogenized beam at the output port of the second monochromator and greatly reduced stray light, ideal for spectroradiometry, Raman or UV measurements of solar radiation.
The arrangement of the 9072DS allows it to act either as a tunable bandpass filter or a tunable notch filter. Arranged as a tunable bandpass filter the bandpass of the device is determined by the width of an intermediate slit. When arranged as a tunable notch filter the width of the notch is determined by the physical width of an opaque notch placed at the intermediate slit position.
The 9072DS can also be used to pass or filter out several selected wavelengths by using a custom intermediate multi-slit mask instead of a single width intermediate slit.

The spectroradiometer is based on an asymmetric Czerney-Turner scanning monochromator design. The system can hold up to 3 gratings for an F/3 aperture. The TEO-200-X series of FTIR spectrometers represent a low cost Fourier transform infrared spectrometers and employ a number of unique features that ensure high performance from a compact instrument. The 200-X measures just 59 X 39 X 19 cm and is regarded as one of the most compact and versatile infrared FTIR spectrophotometers. The design of the 200-X is unique both in terms of optical design and the software and firmware designed specifically to significantly reduce overall analytical times. The interferometer geometry employs a new compact Michelson self compensating optical system that eliminates many of the optical alignment problems found in conventional type optical interferometers. The 200-X design avoids the use of conventional corner cube optics and dynamic alignment. In practice this means that the instrument can be used in the research laboratory, in any university or college environment and if required, can also be used outside laboratory or in remote locations.

The sample compartment is large and can accommodate all of the normal sample handling requirements relating to FTIR spectroscopy. This unique compartment will also accommodate a wide range of accessories supplied by specialist accessory manufacturers. Overall dimensions are W20 X D26 X H16 cm . The optical axis is 74.5 mm above the base of the sample compartment and there is free space of 90 mm above the optical axis to the underside of the lid.

The TEO-200-X series of FTIR spectrometers represent a low cost Fourier transform infrared spectrometers and employ a number of unique features that ensure high performance from a compact instrument. The 200-X measures just 59 X 39 X 19 cm and is regarded as one of the most compact and versatile infrared FTIR spectrophotometers. The design of the 200-X is unique both in terms of optical design and the software and firmware designed specifically to significantly reduce overall analytical times. The interferometer geometry employs a new compact Michelson self compensating optical system that eliminates many of the optical alignment problems found in conventional type optical interferometers. The 200-X design avoids the use of conventional corner cube optics and dynamic alignment. In practice this means that the instrument can be used in the research laboratory, in any university or college environment and if required, can also be used outside laboratory or in remote locations.

The sample compartment is large and can accommodate all of the normal sample handling requirements relating to FTIR spectroscopy. This unique compartment will also accommodate a wide range of accessories supplied by specialist accessory manufacturers. Overall dimensions are W20 X D26 X H16 cm . The optical axis is 74.5 mm above the base of the sample compartment and there is free space of 90 mm above the optical axis to the underside of the lid.

The TEO200 is unique in terms of its optical geometry and software/firmware design. The optical geometry is simplified by employing a new and remarkably compact Michelson self compensating optical system that eliminates many of the optical alignment problems found in conventional linear and pendulum type optical interferometers. For example, the TEO200 design avoids the use of conventional corner cube optics and dynamic alignment. In practical terms, the instrument can be used inside a research laboratory, or even as a mobile unit in outside environments. Its software and firmware design is also tightly coordinated which significantly reduces overall data acquisition and computational time.
The sealed, desiccated enclosure of the TEO200 eliminates the need for continuous dry nitrogen purging during operation. Other notable features include an air cooled IR source as oppose to water cooled, and the interferometer mechanical bearing does not require gas supply. There are however, three dry nitrogen gas inlets on the rear of the spectrometer for the purging of the detector compartment, sample compartment, and interferometer compartment from moisture, carbon dioxide and other gases.

The 9490 monochromator is Sciencetech's second highest resolution monochromator, with 1m focal length. With a 2400 l/mm grating it can achieve resolutions better than 0.01 nm in the standard single pass configuration. This version uses 84 x 84 mm gratings for an aperture of f/9.7.By default the monochromator comes with a single grating kinematic mount. Users can manually swap one grating for another without losing alignment. An optional motorized 3-grating turret is available for automatic grating selection without opening the housing. The 9490 has a flat field output allowing it to operate as a spectrograph using a linear array, multi-channel detector to capture the entire output spectrum continuously. Sciencetech provides a selection of 1" wide CCDs and photo-diode linear array detectors mounted on a multi-axis adjustable focusing platform for use with the 9490.
Some models of the 9490 can be updgraded to dual pass operation (-DP). With the -DP dual pass upgrade option even higher resolution is available by switching to a "double pass" configuration that effectively doubles the focal length to 2m.
