Custom FTIR

Sciencetech is proud to have been involved with a custom project for the Eurpoean Space Agency (ESA) for their Planck/Herschel Satellite projects. These devices were used to calibrate the detectors on the system for measuring the Cosmic Microwave Background. The mission required two customized FTIRs, called the SFTS and the CFTS ("Standard FTS" and "Custom FTS", although both customized), which involved large upgrades to the systems.

These upgrades included higher resolution, clean room assembly, larger optics, and numerous software and electronics modifications. The missions were both outstanding successes, and ESA has provided testimonials for the flawless operation of the two FTIRs Sciencetech provided to the researchers.

Custom Solar Simulation

Our customer presented us with a multi-faceted design challenge. How do you make a highly uniform and intense light source with a large target area, specific spectral match and a divergence angle approaching that of the sun?

Using our expertise in optical modeling and years of experience building xenon short arc lamp-based light sources and solar simulators, Sciencetech took up the challenge.


Following IEC: 62217 B.3.2 of stress testing high voltage insulators Sciencetech was sourced to design a solar simulator for irradiation provided by a xenon arc lamp with a nominal output of 6500w and equipped with boron silicate glass filters. The distance between the xenon lamp and test specimens is approximately 480mm

This Solar simulator had to withstand harsh environments of continuous testing with artificial rain containing salt as well as a temperature cycling from low temperatures up to 50c in 15 minutes.

Blue Light Source

Custom Light Source

The customer approached Sciencetech to help develop an innovative design for their blue light source, used in PDT. The current system used by the customer was large and took up a significant footprint in treatment clinics, and the customer needed to reduce the size while maintaining power on target. Additionally, the new light source needed to be able to illuminate a variety of target surfaces (arms, legs, and faces), modifying the flux for each surface to ensure proper light dosage at the skin surface. The customer had precise guidelines for wavelength, power, size, and flexibility in their design, and were confident that Sciencetech's in-house R&D department was up to the task of meeting, or exceeding, all their technical requirements

Custom FTIR

Sciencetech has provided several custom sample chambers for the SPS-300, built to customer specifications. This sample chamber, provided to the Chinese Academy of Science, was built with a unique cooling system designed to cool the samples to liquid helium temperatures. The sample chamber is currently operational at a university in Beijing.

Custom Spectrometer

Approached by a client who desired a system capable of measuring oil fluorescence. Our original design was for a laboratory-grade instrument, which in later projects we continued to reduce in size and power. The most recent iteration was built as handheld units run on a battery. Sciencetech also built custom software to allow analysis of the samples and outputs as the client requested.

Custom Solar Simulation

Sciencetech produced a custom solar simulator to EADS Astrium Satellites in 2013. The custom solar simulator is used in a vacuum environment to represent the solar flux in the entrance cavity for a space-borne telescope.

Custom Solar Simulation

Sciencetech engineers produced a custom collimated flash solar simulator system for a customer requiring a fash system for testing a novel concentrated photovoltaics (CPV) panel. The CPV panel used a tripe junction cell which required better than class A spectral matching over a 400nm-1800nm spectral range, as well as an extremely high level of collimation over a very large target (up to 2x2m).
