    Sciencetech designs and fabricates more than twenty different variants of monochromators; as shown in the following table. Some Sciencetech monochromators models have a computer controlled interchangeable 3-grating turret for automatic grating and wavelength selection:

    Standard series monochromators can be configured in a number of different ways. Note that each standard series monochromator includes a Sciencetech SS-80 variable slit assembly. The included slit is usually mounted on the Monochromator input port.

    Sciencetech’s line of Standard and Hi-Res monochromators have similar mechanical limitations. Below is a list of limitations related to the Sciencetech 9055 monochromator.

    Monochromator Gratings

    Selecting the Right Grating


    Grating selection is a crucial part of building a monochromator. Each ruled or holographic grating is designed to diffract light most efficiently over a specific band of wavelengths. Generally ruled gratings are designed with a ‘blaze’ wavelength at which the grating diffraction efficiency is a maximum. Gratings also vary by the line density (ruled lines/mm). The smaller a gratings line density is the larger the angular separation will be between two adjacent diffracted wavelengths.

    A monochromator’s dispersion is a function of the monochromator’s focal length and the line density of the grating installed in the monochromator.

    Generally each grating has a measured efficiency curve. The efficiency curve is usually provided with the grating in Littrow condition. Under Littrow condition the diffracted wavelength retraces the optical path of the incident radiation on the grating surface. Sciencetech’s monochromators do not operate in Littrow condition therefore it should not be expected that the grating efficiency when installed in the monochromator will be exactly the same as the measured grating efficiency curve under Littrow condition.

    The Sciencetech 9030 monochromator is a compact, single grating scanning monochromator with 100 mm focal length (both output and input). It has a manual wavelength selector dial with an optional external motor drive for computerized control. The compact design is made possible by its Seya-Namioka optical layout, using a single holographic concave grating and f/3.2 aperture. A pair of removable fixed-width slits are included for the input and output ports. Several removable fixed slit width sizes are available to choose from ranging from 100 μm to 3 mm width. Additional removable slits and custom width slits can also be purchased separately. There are 5 grating choices (sold separately) covering from UV to near-IR. The 9030 monochromator cannot be used as a spectrograph and therefore only accepts single channel and PMT detectors at its output port. However, it can be used as an excitation wavelength tunable light source.
    The 9030 is Sciencetech's most economical monochromator with a manual control wavelength selector and removable, fixed-width slits. The input and output ports are purposely placed optically in-line, making it a simple addition to a straight line beam in an optical system. Being a scanning monochromator, it does not have a flat output field and hence cannot be operated as a spectrograph with a multi-channel detector mounted at the output port.

    9072S is a small 1/8m scanning monochromator. The 9072S uses plane gratings 30mm x 30mm in size and utilizes a Czerny Turner optical configuration. The 9072S is designed to be used with single channel detectors or connected to another 9072S to form a double additive or subtractive system. The base 9072S system has a triple grating turret which is computer controlled. 4-grating turret is optional.

    Gratings and Grating Holders (120-8512) are sold separately.
    The 9072S is compatible with SS80 and SS84 adjustable slits and SS-F fixed slits. Comes with the adjustable slit.
    It includes Sci-mono software for basic wavelength control. Our fully-featured spectroscopy package, SciSpec, is sold separately.

Bandpass is determined by the width of an intermediate slit, but the 9030DS has a net output dispersion of zero because the monochromators are optically coupled so that the dispersion of the second grating cancels that of the first. This leads to homogenized wavelengths at the output port - there is no spectrum, only a single undispersed slit image - which allows the unit to act as a tunable bandpass or notch filter.

    Stray light of all sorts is drastically reduced in a double monochromator, and in the 9030DS it is further minimized by the use of concave holographic gratings. It is ideal for applications where stray light is a problem - where there may be a strong scattered background, such as in spectroradiometry, Raman or UV measurements of solar radiation.

    The 9030DS can be used as a tunable notch filter to remove one particular wavelength while allowing all others over the bandpass to pass through, making it an ideal instrument to pre-filter out the strong laser excitation wavelength in a Fluorescence or Raman system so that the weaker output signals can be observed.

    The 9030DS is a fully integrated unit with the two diffraction gratings coupled mechanically for accurate positioning, adjusted manually using a thumb-wheel. A variety of fixed slit widths is available. It can be motorized and controlled by a computer with the Sciencetech MD100 stepper motor and drive system option. Only one motor and drive unit is required for both monochromators, enabling control via Sciencetech Sci-Mono Active-X library or full featured Sci-Spec software.

This model has an f/3.5 aperture (for the "Fast" version with f/2.5, please see the 9055F). It has a computer-controlled interchangeable turret for automatic grating and wavelength selection.
    Both the input and output ports are located on the front faceplate of the monochromator, and the system includes one SS80 slit at the input port. CE compliant.

    It Includes a Sci-Mono, a Windows based software module with a simple graphical user interface for controlling Sciencetech stepping monochromator wavelength selection. SciMono is provided free of charge with a Sciencetech motorized monochromator when SciSpec software has not been purchased.

    Sciencetech Software (Sci-Spec) is available at an additional cost. It is a standalone data acquisition and allows controlling the monochromator by itself.

    The 9057 is a half meter monochromator and spectrograph with an f/8 aperture. This system is a Czerny-Turner design optimized to reduce aberrations.
    This monochromator supports up to three 50x50mm gratings on a computer controlled turret. It includes a single input slit by default; please select appropriate output mounting (slit, detector or CCD mounting, etc...) when ordering.
    A fast version of the 9057, the 9057F, operates with 64x64mm gratings and offers better throughput with the same optical pathlength. Please discuss with your Sciencetech technical sales staff member to find if the 9057F is a better choice for your particular application.

    The 9057 is a half meter monochromator and spectrograph with an f/8 aperture. This system is a Czerny-Turner design optimized to reduce aberrations.
    This monochromator supports up to three 50x50mm gratings on a computer controlled turret. It includes a single input slit by default; please select appropriate output mounting (slit, detector or CCD mounting, etc...) when ordering.

    In the 9072DS, the grating in the second monochromator is arranged such that it reverses the spectral dispersion of the first monochromator. This leads to a spectrally homogenized beam at the output port of the second monochromator and greatly reduced stray light, ideal for spectroradiometry, Raman or UV measurements of solar radiation.
    The arrangement of the 9072DS allows it to act either as a tunable bandpass filter or a tunable notch filter. Arranged as a tunable bandpass filter the bandpass of the device is determined by the width of an intermediate slit. When arranged as a tunable notch filter the width of the notch is determined by the physical width of an opaque notch placed at the intermediate slit position.

Double monochromators have the advantage of extremely low stray light levels by virtue of using two gratings. An intermediate slit between the two units, used to define the wavelengths that pass to the second unit, also masks off light scattered within the body of the first unit. In double additive operation the 9055DX effective focal length (1/2m), dispersion and resolution (1.7nm/mm and .09nm with a 1200 l/mm grating) are doubled compared to a single unit, making this mode useful where high resolution is important. In double subtractive operation there is no dispersion in the output beam and only a single slit image appears at the output instead of a broad spread of spectral images. This allows the system to operate as a tuneable bandpass or notch filter.
