Single Channel Detector

Sciencetech Single Channel Detectors

Detector Material and Spectral Region

Single channel detectors typically offer the smallest noise equivalent power (NEP values) and highest sensitivity levels. Single channel detectors are the best choice when you need to accurately measure extremely low light levels. Line and area detectors are typically used when measuring fast phenomena across multiple wavelengths (in a spectroscopic system).

Temperature Control

Some detectors can be temperature controlled or require cryogenics such as liquid helium or liquid nitrogen in order to be operable.

AC or DC Coupling

Some detectors are photoconductors and require modulated light in order to detect a signal. These types of detectors are listed as AC coupled. Generally, for AC coupled detectors a lock-in amplifier (LIA) or demodulator are required before measurements can be performed.

Sciencetech's proprietary wideband detector design comes packaged in our standard "hockey puck" enclosure (2" diameter x 1" high) and is connectorized to be powered directly from the Stanford SR-810/830 type lock-in amplifiers,
The spectral range is limited by high density polyethylene window.
The detector WILL saturate on the visible light from the lamp. After alignment, cover the entire input opening of the detector head with thin black polyethylene to prevent undesired visible light from overloading the detector.
This detector is suitable for direct connection to Stanford SR-830 lockin preamp power. When using the Stanford lock-in, the signal overload indicator will light just before the detector saturates. The SCIDTGS-PE detector is suitable for testing FTIR alignment and material transmission measurements without special cooling.
Upon installation, the optical system MUST be re-aligned to image the iris of the light source onto the detector element. This may require rotating the entire detector head to an optimum position and/or adjusting mirrors and re-focusing.
Element size 2.0 mm dia.
Spectral bandwidth Limited by High Density Polyethylene window
Sensitivity 133,000 volts per watt HDPE Window
Frequency response 8.8Hz - 265Hz (-3db points)
N.E.P. 1x10-10 watts (100Hz, 1Hz BW)

Power requirements: +/- 15 to +/- 24 volts max @ +/- 8 mA max.
Power connections: DB-9M Pins 2,3,4,5,9 no connection

This single element detector is effective in sensing wavelengths between 1000 nm and 5500 nm. Please note that it is available in various sensor area sizes and includes a dewar to hold liquid nitrogen for significantly lower dark current and improved signal to noise. The output is an analog signal available through a BNC connector at the back of the detector housing. Since the signal is analog, an optional 12-bit and 16-bit data acquisition system and software is available to digitize its output into a computer. A DC power supply for this detector (sold separately) is also required. This detector is designed for use with scanning monochromators to capture the intensity of one wavelength at a time. An optional mount allows it to mate to any Sciencetech scanning monochromators. Sciencetech can also provide an optional custom mount for mating to non-Sciencetech monochromators and spectrographs.

Sciencetech’s SCI420BJ-0 wide-band pyroelectric detector is capable of measuring the amount of energy in nanosecond and picosecond pulses. We expect that it is possible to measure femtosecond pulses, but this has not yet been tested. The detector is windowless and a selection of windows is available to limit the spectral response. The SCI420BJ-0 is not hygroscopic and may be operated indefinitely under normal atmospheric conditions and at temperatures above 100°C. This single element detector is effective at sensing wavelengths between 2,000nm and 15,000nm. Please note that it is available in various sizes and includes a dewar to hold liquid nitrogen (to lower dark current and improved signal to noise). To operate this detector liquid nitrogren is required. As with most IR detectors MCT detectors are coupled to AC preamplifiers which means they detect changes in light levels. Generally the light signal being detected is modulated with a chopper or the source itself is modulated, such as a pulsed laser source. When using a chopper to modulate the input signal generally a lock-in amplifier is used to demodulate the signal. The output signal from the MCT is an analog signal available through a BNC on the back of the detector housing. Since the signal is analog, an optional 12-bit or 16-bit data acquistion system and software is available (sold separately).
The MCT detector includes a preamplier. This system also requires a power supply (sold separately, compatible with the PS-1/LIA 590-0106 when a lock in amplifier and power supply is required or PS-1 590-0006 when only a power supply is required).
To connect this detector to a Sciencetech monochromator use the cryogenic detector mount P/# 125-8016

The standard units contain switchable gains, BNC outputs, and shielded power connections. Custom options include offset control, additional gain control, and multi-stage amplifiers.

This single element detector is effective at sensing wavelengths between 2,000nm and 12,000nm. Please note that it is available in various sizes and includes a dewar to hold liquid nitrogen (to lower dark current and improved signal to noise). To operate this detector, a supply of liquid nitrogren is required. As with most IR detectors, MCT detectors are coupled to AC preamplifiers which means they detect only changes in light levels.
This MCT detector includes a preamplier. This system also requires a power supply (sold separately, compatible with PS-1/LIA [590-0106] or PS-1 [590-0006] when another lock in amplifier is used).
To connect this detector to a Sciencetech monochromator use the cryogenic detector mount P/# 125-8016
