Why Distilled Water?
Distilled water is recommended over tap water as it does not contain any impurities that absorbs spectral features from the light. Tap water, with its many impurities, will reduce transmission efficiency in the visible region.
UV Applications
The standard IR absorbing water filter can is equipped with glass windows which absorbs UV light. In this configuration, only visible light can transmit through. Optional Fused Silica Windows are available for UV applications.
Cooling
The colling media (typically distilled water) inside the IR absorbing water filter needs to be cooled or otherwise it can boil. Therefore, the IR absorbing water filter has an "in" and "out" water connector for water cooled recirculation.
Heavy Duty Mounting Flange
The water IR filter has a heavy duty mounting flange such that it can be mounted on its end without a bottom support. This is particular useful when the water IR water filter needs to be connected in series to other optical assemblies in series such as a regular filter holder and condensing lens assembly. With such a heavy duty flange, it can hold up all the items connected to it in series without a supporting bracket. For example, when such an assembly needs to be connected to the output port of Sciencetech's 200-1K and 201-1K arc lamp housings. In some competing designs, there is no heavy duty flange and hence such optical components need a supporting bracket to hold them together in series.
