Combined with the original collimating lens of the arc lamp housing, this beam condensing assembly acts as a 2 piece plano lens system that focuses the 2" diameter output beam into a point. The lens in the arc lamp housing collimates the light while the additional lens in the condensing assembly refocuses it to a point. The beam condensing assembly mates onto the front of the arc lamp housing output port so that the additional lens is in series with the original arc lamp housing lens. Depending on the specifications and distance between the two plano lens inside the beam condensing assembly, the output beam can be condensed into any f number. The f number must be specified at the time of ordering and is typically used to match the input f number of a monochromator, spectrograph or sample chamber that the light source is used to illuminate. For illuminating into a fiber optic bundle, please add the Fiber Bundle Coupler (FIB4). The standard glass optics version is for visible and IR applications as glass filters harmful UV rays. A fused silica version that does not filter UV rays is also available for UV applications. Unit cost includes the alignment labor to match the specified f number which is a time consuming process.
f Number Setting
The f number setting depends on the lens selection and distance between the lens. Due to these variations, the customer would need to specify the desired f number when ordering so that Sciencetech can configure the lens inside the condensing assembly. Please note that the location of the first lens inside the housing assembly does not move as the distance between the two lens is adjusted by moving the location of the second lens inside the CON2-2L assembly.
Length of Coupling Tube
Please note that actual length of coupling tube provided can vary with the selected f number.
Spot Size
Please note that the final spot size is limited by the gap size of the arc lamp or filament size of a QTH lamp and therefore should not be considered infinitely small. If the application requires a very small spot size to fit through the input slit of a monochromator, please check with a Sciencetech Applications Specialist to select an appropriate lamp such that the spot size is sufficiently small enough to meet requirements.
Filter Box and Light Source
If a Filter Box (FH) is also purchased the Filter Box is placed between the collimating lens of the lamp housing and the condenser lens of the Beam Condensing Assembly. An interface flange maybe required for mating the Beam Condensing Assembly to the Filter Box.
Optical Center Height Consideration
Please note that the lamp housing (TH3 and 201-100) typically has a taller optical center height than monochromators and sample chambers. To align them, the lamp housing can be mounted horizontally using an optional horizontal mount such that its optical center height can be lowered to match. Please note that the 201-100 arc lamp housing should not be mounted horizontally if using a mercury arc lamp as they have much shorter service life in a horizontal orientation. Xenon arc lamps can be mounted horizontally.
Mask Stop
In some instances, a mask inside the coupling tube is used to reduce the beam diameter as the excess light causes stray light into the monochromator. Although this is not typically performed, it may occur when the condensing assembly is used to focus light into a monochromator or spectrograph
Obstruction of Monochromator/Spectrograph Output Port From Light Source Housing
Please note that if a 201-100 or TH3 lamp housing is mated to the input port of a monochromator using this condensing assembly (in either vertical or horizontal orientation), the physical size of the lamp housing may obstruct any detectors from being mounted to the output port of the monochromator/spectrograph. If this option is desired, please add a second side port (lateral port) to the monochromator/spectrograph so that the light housing can be mounted onto the side wall thus avoiding this obstruction.
